The combination of food and setting doesn’t get more artistic than at Esker Grove in Minneapolis. This James Beard finalist for Best New Restaurant has risen to the unusual challenge of creating a food and dining experience that matches its setting inside the Walker Art Center, one of the five most-visited museums of modern art in the U.S.
Not surprisingly, the food that arrives at your table at Esker Grove is arranged on the plate with artfulness that matches the environment. Yet, more than artsy presentation, Esker Grove is all about great cooking with fresh ingredients prepared with attention to detail. The restaurant calls it “a layered sensory dining experience of food: taste, visual, texture, aroma.”
The lunch menu offers simple plates such as avocado toast, gorgeous salads and larger dishes such as gnocchi with lamb ragout and fennel. At dinner, you’ll find a changing array of entrees such as roasted sturgeon, capon and lamb shoulder. Or, pop in simply for a cocktail and bar snacks such as eggplant tartine or fried chicken sliders served with mole sauce, avocado and cilantro.
These dining options are meant to combine perfectly with a tour of the Walker’s galleries, exhibitions and events. You’ll dine next to a floor-to-ceiling collage by local artist Frank Big Bear. Or dine on the outdoor patio and take a tour of the Sculpture Garden just outside the museum with its sensational view of the Minneapolis skyline. Esker Grove satisfies both the eyes and palate.
