Dunvegan Castle

1000 year-old Clan MacLeod Stronghold

Save to my Account

Rectangular and somber, and with commanding views from its rocky outcrop, Dunvegan Castle has been the seat of Clan MacLeod since the 13th century and claims the title of Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. But it’s current form – mock battlements and all – date from the 1840s so lack authenticity.

But there are several acres of beautifully maintained gardens to enjoy; while inside a clutch of oddities capture the imagination.

The most intriguing is the tattered 11th-century Fairy Flag which is said to be able to rally help from those tiny mythological beings.

Also here is a lock of Bonnie Prince Charlie‘s hair and one of Flora MacDonald‘s corsets.
