Downtown Dubai claims more than its fair share of global superlatives including the world’s highest building, tallest hotel and largest mall. It’s also home to the spectacular Dubai Fountain, the world’s biggest, housed within the lake at the back of the Dubai Mall and comprising hundreds of nozzles and jets measuring 275m in length and capable of shooting jets of water 150m into the air.
The fountain is only turned on from dusk onwards, when it powers into life accompanied by a variety of Arabic, Hindi and classical tunes, with myriad jets of colourfully illuminated water spouting and swaying elegantly in time to the music. “Performances”, lasting around 4–5 minutes, are staged every 20min between 6pm and 10pm (Thurs–Sat until 11pm).
It’s also possible to take a short (and rather unexciting) boat ride around the lake aboard a traditional abra. Boats leave from outside Wafi Gourmet restaurant with departures 5.10pm–10.50pm. Tickets cost a rather pricey 65dh for the 25min ride.
