Following a big fire, the celebrated Petergate Fisheries was reborn again in the shape of Drake’s.
Its presence given away by the smell wafting down Petergate, this classic chippy is a York favourite with locals and visitors alike. Rave reviews seem to be the norm, both for the food and for the cheerful staff.
Be prepared to wait for your fish and chips at busy times. Mostly takeaway and eat-out-of-the-bag, but there is also a café upstairs where you can eat in, and add tea and bread and butter to your meal.
Expect to pay around a fiver for haddock, chips and mushy peas to take away.
Drake’s Fisheries is especially handy if you come out of the Minster famished after serious sightseeing, though Wackers (in the other direction) or Mr Chippy (round the corner) would be acceptable alternatives, probably with less waiting.
Tip If you want large or jumbo haddock, call out from the queue so they start cooking it for you.
