Don Khon is possibly the best choice for satisfying a variety of needs when visiting the 4000 islands. It is slightly more upmarket than neighboring Don Det, which has become known as the backpacker isle. While we aren’t talking about luxury, at least there are a few better options here, such as a selection of floating “raftels” and some restored colonial villas with amenities like good air-con and hot water.
More importantly, Don Khon offers more than just a place to hang out and relax. It has the most “activities” on tap of any of the islands, and you shouldn’t get bored too quickly here. The Li Phi falls are found here, there are bicycle and walking paths all around the island, taking in the old French narrow gauge rail line, there are some nice sandy beaches in the southwest of the island, and Don Khon is where you can book a boat tour to go out and see the Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins. Throw in some decent restaurants, WiFi friendly cafes, good transport connections and travel agents, and Don Khon is an easy place to spend 4-5 days.
