When you hear people say, “There’s Magic at the Beach,” you should know they’re talking about the shows at Dickens Parlour Theatre in nearby Millville (five miles west of the beach). You’ll laugh, you’ll be amazed, and you’ll be delighted. Then, you’ll marvel that this little gem is in the middle of a one-acre pine grove in a town of 554 people. This intimate 60-seat theater generally features such magicians as owner Rich Bloch and Susan, “Miss Direction,” his wife-assistant; Ran’D Shine; Keith Fields & Lady Sarah; Derek Hughes; or mentalist Jon Stetson. However, you might also see Gerry Timlin, Irish folk musician or hear a lecture by Eliot Cohen.
During the summer, there’s a magic show every night and sometimes more than one. Jay Read presents a 2 p.m. matinee show (and birthday parties, etc.) for the children on rainy summer days. During the rest of the year, shows are presented on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Shows start at 7 p.m., with free popcorn and beverages for purchase in the parlour starting at 6 p.m. and a post-show gathering (back in the parlour) where you’ll see some close-up magic, talk to the magicians, and partake in a post-show nosh and sip if you wish.
