Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens

An oasis of healing in the hills behind Byron

Try to pick a fine-weather day to visit the Crystal Castle, a scenic 20-minute drive from Byron, because although the organic café, the psychic and astrological readings, the crystal displays, the gift shop and the aura photography sessions are all good reasons to visit, the Castle’s best features are outside.

With its lush gardens populated with sculptures and boulders of rose quartz, an ancient labyrinth (a way to slow body and mind at the same time), a bamboo-forest walk, a children’s playground (with free face-painting on weekends and daily during school holidays) and the World Peace Buddhist Stupa, the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere and blessed by the Dalai Lama no less, this is a special place much-loved by locals and visitors alike.

The spacious covered deck of the Lotus Cafe, which serves organic coffee and other wholesome and healthy drinks and meals, is a peaceful place to spend time too (but open only to Crystal Castle visitors who have paid the entry fee).
