With the building officially opened in 1895, the Croatian National Theatre or HNK takes up the centre of Marshal Tito Square.
Designed by Viennese architects, Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, the building encompasses a Neo-Baroque style which brings together ballet, theatre and opera companies both from Croatia and around the globe.
You can buy tickets in the box office which is open daily.
In front of the theatre, you’ll find the Well of Life sculpture by Croatia’s famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. It’s made up of a round pool encompassed by bronze nude figures. The figures seem to be reaching over to get some of the water from the pool, hence the theme of the human zest for life.
