Cotai didn’t exist when I first visited Macau in the 1980s, but after Macau was reverted back to China in 1997 and gambling became deregulated in 2002, it was clear more land was needed in tiny Macau to support more casinos, hotels and everything else envisioned for the future.

Voila Cotai, which now occupies what was once water and consists of reclaimed land that now fuses two former islands, Coloane and Taipa (Cotai’s name is a combination of Coloane and Taipa). Cotai is where you find the city’s biggest hotels, shopping malls, casinos and more, with even more planned in the future. The Venetian Macao-Resort Hotel, Sands Cotai Central, Galaxy Macau, City of Dreams, and Studio City are just some of the big players here.
