Colorado’s The Home Ranch: Horseback Riding and Gourmet Meals

There are many guest ranches where the food is good and the horseback riding  is great. There are only a few where both are spectacular and Colorado’s The Home Ranch, a Relais & Chateaux property,  is one of them.

All the ways you can play at The Home Ranch

The setting in the Elk River Valley for this year-around resort is as pretty as any in Colorado.  In the summer, the fields framed by mountain peaks are green. The riding trails on the ranch and the hiking trails in the surrounding valley beckon. During the week-long all-inclusive vacations,  guests go horseback riding, hiking and  can experience other activities high in the Rocky Mountains. The Home Ranch has stellar programs for kids and teens.

This location is especially beautiful in the fall when the Aspen leaves cover the hills with gold and in the winter when the light reflects off the snow.

Winter activities include cross country skiing, with or without guides, along groomed trails or into the back country. You can go horseback riding through the woods and pastures, even when the snow is three wires high (top of the barbed wire fences). End the afternoon tubing down the ranch’s own hill. The staff can arrange skiing at Steamboat Resort or fly fishing on the Yampa River. All of these will help you burn off the extra calories gained in the dining room.  In the spring activities expand to include more riding options including lessons, hiking, biking or just hanging around the pool. There are special programs for younger children and teens including swimming, rock climbing and rafting that free the parents to really vacation.

Food at The Home Ranch

The Home Ranch is farm-to table and grows its own vegetables and the biggest problems at meals is what to choose and how much. Ask about wine parings. They’ve got a good wine selection. As a plus, the dining room provides to meet and sit with other guests. An extra treat is live music in the lounge before dinner with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Spend an afternoon cooking with the chef and you’ll take home lots of tips.

Lodging at the Home Ranch

Stay in one of the cabins and you’ll be reluctant to leave. Whether sitting by the wood stove and reading or enjoying your private hot tub or sitting  on the porch,  these cabins are comfortable and perfect places to wind down and just relax.

If you’re coming from out-of-state and flying into Steamboat (Hayden) Airport don’t bother to rent a car. You won’t need it at the Home Ranch and the staff will pick you up and return you to the airport.
