C&O Canal Area

Just inland past Georgetown’s famous waterfront area is the C&O Canal trail, which offers a quieter perspective on the fast-paced neighborhood. The canal runs perpendicular to the Potomac River and was constructed by the Chesapeake & Ohio Company in the late 1820s for moving coal, lumber and other goods to the tidal basin. The joggers, bikers, hikers, and wanderers of DC take advantage of the towpath running along its 184.5-mile-long edge and carves out a quieter refuge in the bustling Georgetown area.
