At 8 o’clock sharp, when the band leader turns to the crowd and shouts “Hi-de-ho,” the audience of locals and visitors shouts it right back at him. The Chatham Band Concerts in Chatham has begun, exactly as it has since it began in 1931 (minus four years due to WWII).
About 40 band members of all ages fill the gazebo, and pump out old and new faves. Multiple generations of concert-goers know to lay their blankets out early. Some even start staking a claim by 10 am. By the time the show starts, balloons are everywhere, along with picnics and bags of popcorn. It’s a spirited, old-fashioned town get-together.
Those in the know walk over to the Chatham Candy Manor (484 Main St., 508-945-0825) to stock up on sugary delights before the show.
