Charles River Esplanade

Down by the banks of the River Charles

Once a big muddy mess, the banks of the Charles River transformed into one of Boston’s most popular and pretty urban playgrounds — the Charles River Esplanade. The verdant parkland follows the south shore of the Charles River. It’s a great place for picnics, sailing, jogging, cycling, and more.

The Esplanade is also the site of the Hatch Shell, the city’s major outdoor performance venue. Catch any number of free concerts, movies or festivals here. Most famously, this is where the Boston Pops perform on the 4th of July, culminating in the famous fireworks display. Seating is first-come-first-serve on the grassy lawn, so come early and bring a blanket.

The loveliest stretch of the Esplanade is between the Longfellow Bridge (in Beacon Hill) and the BU Bridge.
