Castle Hill

Sitka’s historical Castle Hill was once the site of both Tlingit and Russian forts and thus gives visitors a grand view of the surrounding city, Sound, and mountains. Take a short walk to the top of the hill, move among the cannons and plaques as you take in one of the greatest views of the area without full-on climbing a mountain. Castle Hill is the site where the Alaskan territory was formally transferred from Russia to the United States, and the first place in all of Alaska that hoisted the US flag. Now, the Hill is a protected landmark and is kept up as a small state park.
