Casa Ciriaco opened in 1897 and nine years later, on 31 May 1906, it would be a first-hand witness to the assassination attempt on King Alfonso XIII and his wife, Victoria Eugenia. It was on the day of their wedding, as they made their procession to the Royal Palace along Calle Mayor.
From a higher floor in the next-door building, no. 88, an anarchist threw flowers that hid a bomb. Some 23 people lost their lives in the explosion though the royal couple was unharmed.
Across the street you will find a monument to those who died on this day.
