On warm days, this strip of sand is the place to be. Backed by restaurants and the sweet Capitola village shops, it’s easy to see why this is the preferred beach for many visitors to the area.
For the most part, the waters are generally calm on the main strip of sand. Kids love to play in the whitewater, while grownups SUP out past the buoys. Just beyond the rock jetty is a surf area, which typically works for newbies, though winter, the swells can be dangerous.
A river runs through the beach area and little kids like to play in the shallows. Around the pier you’ll see plenty of sea life.
In summer, the city cordons off part of the beach for the Junior Guards program, making these strands even more crowded. If you want solace, this is not the place for you, especially on Wednesday evenings, when live music engulfs the area.
Parking is limited, but you can typically pay for spots in the lots up by the police station.
