This is an easy day trip from Lucerne, with glorious views over the lake and the surrounding countryside. Bürgenstock also has some good easy walks and a soon-to-be-reborn luxury resort with a world-class spa.
From 2017 you’ll be able to take a boat from Lucerne to the stop known as Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock, and from there a funicular to breezy Bürgenstock (874m), a resort undergoing a thorough revamp (from the same company as the Schweizerhof in Bern). There are places to eat and drink up here, and a restaurant at nearby point of interest Hammetschwand.
While the works are underway, you’ll have to take a train to Stansstad, then change to a bus to Obbürgen, followed by a short walk to Bürgenstock.
Once at Bürgenstock, head west by following the yellow walking signs marked Felsenweg and soak up the stunning views out over the lake (you may need a head for heights in some places). After about half an hour you’ll come to the 1905 Hammetschwand Lift, a needle-like structure that is Europe’s highest outdoor elevator and that will transport you to even more dizzying heights (1132m) and views (it was featured in the 1967 James Bond film Goldfinger). The lift costs CHF10/5 one-way per adult/child and runs from mid-May to mid-October.
