Closed in 2004 by Hurricane Charley, this mangrove canopy trail, reopened in 2011, cuts through a small island offshore from Captiva.
The trail itself is short — under a mile one way — but the paddle out from Captiva’s marinas takes 20 minutes or more, depending on bay conditions.
The trail is maintained under the auspices of J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Kayakers have reported sightings of green herons, juvenile alligators, and even a bobcat.
