Situated where the Brunswick River meets the sea “Bruns”, as it’s affectionately known, is first and foremost a place for simple pleasures: swimming at pretty Torakina beach inside the river mouth, standing on the breakwall watching fishing boats come and go, and long afternoon walks on the long surf beach that stretches south to Byron.
If you’re there on a sunny Sunday afternoon find a table at the beer garden of the local pub, the art deco Hotel Brunswick, and settle in for a treat of live, local music.
For chic shopping, try Lazybones, a beautifully styled store full of retro cotton frocks, cashmere scarves and botanical wallpaper. Still on Park Street and nearly next door, in a grand Italianate terrace covered with vines, Fabulous Mrs Fox has everything from vintage clothing (even faux fur jackets) to toy tarantulas and, out the back, a retro-styled guest studio with its own private courtyard called One Fabulous Room.
Cool café/restaurants around town are Footbridge, The Terrace Espresso Bar, Table View, Yami’s for fresh vegetarian fare, Park Street Homemade Pasta Bar and Fleet wine bar.
