Nicely positioned as a sort of nesting place between Lake Uri and Lake Lucerne, surrounded by steep mountains and blessed with the kind of views that inspire poetry and painting, Brunnen is a good small-sized town often called into service as an enjoyable departure or arrival point for the Swiss Path.
It also (in its own right) warrants a short stay if you’re looking to get away from the busier aspects of Lucerne’s popularity, and make a good all-round base from which to explore the rest of Central Switzerland.
Places to visit and things to do include the Swiss Knife Valley Visitor Centre, a cable car ride to the top of the Urmiberg (702m, 2303ft) and a refreshing dip in the popular lakeside swimming spots known as Familienstrandbad Hopfräben (with changing rooms, a restaurant and lots of kid-friendly equipment) and the Lido (entry to either is CHF5).
