Brahmana Vihara Arama is a functioning monastery, rather than a tourist attraction although visitors are welcome, provided they adhere to the rules. Ten day mediation sessions are held with men and women segregated in the meditation rooms and in the residence, including husbands and wives. Compassion retreats are also scheduled throughout the year.
There are a lot of stairs as you make you way from one meditation area to another and on each step an affirmation is printed in Sanskrit and Bahasa Indonesia. Within the rooms are decorative shrines to Buddha. A large golden stupa stands in one compound and another is under construction. The iconic statue of Buddha under the tree is backed by a colourful mural of his disciples, while the highlight is an impressive replica of the iconic Borobudur Buddhist temple near Yogyakarta in Central Java. The remote hillside location of the monastery ensures that visitor numbers remain down and an air of tranquility and peace is maintained.
