More than three decades after it opened Botanica Wichita fills nearly 10 acres full of rolling hills, forested glens and numerous water features with beautiful themed gardens. Established near the Arkansas River, Botanica’s gardens range from traditional Chinese architecture, art and cultural elements, in the Chinese Garden of Friendship, to the Butterfly Garden – whose nectar-rich plantings attract, retain and encourage visits from native and other butterflies. Inside the Downing Children’s Garden, youngsters learn while they play, whether checking out raised garden beds or working a water pump, creating a chalk drawing or following a musical maze. Another recent addition is the Gene E. Spear Railroad Garden, with passenger, freight and work trains that run at various intervals. Botanica Wichita is open Mon.-Sat., year-round with extended Tuesday and Thursday hours from April to September.
