Hidden in Oakland’s produce market district, Blue Bottle is Oakland’s most famous and obsessive coffee roaster. Named after the first coffeehouse in Vienna, Blue Bottle prides itself on serving coffee brewed only with beans roasted within the last 48 hours. Order the signature house drink: a Gibraltar, which is a double shot of espresso mixed with a little milk and served in a tiny glass tumbler. Another popular pick is the chicory-infused New Orleans-style iced coffee.

Directions: It’s a five-minute walk northeast of Jack London Square.
Tip: There’s a much bigger Blue Bottle cafe with more seating inside the gorgeous W.C. Morse Building on Broadway, north of downtown Oakland.
