The 41-mile Black River runs from the Wisconsin/Michigan border to Lake Superior. Its final 14 miles, within the Ottawa National Forest, have been named the Black River National Scenic Byway. Along the way are five waterfalls with varying accessibility.
Black River Harbor, where the Black River runs into Lake Superior, is one of only two harbors within the National Forest System. It’s a former fishing station where commercial fishermen brought in lake trout.
The Black River Harbor Recreation Area offers not only waterfalls and hiking trails but also beaches on Lake Superior. There’s a campground and day-use pavilion at the harbor. The pedestrian suspension bridge, part of the North Country Trail, takes visitors from the park to the beach.
Check out other waterfalls in both Gogebic and Ontonagon counties.
