The attractive perched village of Bélvèdere overlooking the Vésubie and Gordolasque Valleys has a checquered history. Like most of its neighbours it passed between France and Italy over the years.

As the name suggests there is a fine view from here. From the terrace behind the mairie you can see Roquebillière and the Vésubie Valley below with Mont Tournairet (2085m/6840ft) beyond.

Claim to fame

The village’s claim to fame lies in the fact that it was the location for the 1965 television series ‘Belle and Sébastien’. About a boy and his dog, it was first broadcast on French TV. The series was later bought and televised in cartoon form by the BBC.

Don’t miss: While in the village enjoy a pizza at ‘L’Ancien Abattoir
