Barren Ridge Vineyards is a local favorite featuring wines for every palate and stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley.
An old, renovated apple barn houses the tasting room. The fireplace, high ceilings, and warm wood beams and floors make you want to settle in for far long stay. If you plan on visiting several wineries you will find it hard to resist lingering.
Owner John Higgs’ father bought the original apple orchard in 1934. After a career that took them far from the foothills of Virginia, John and his wife Shelby returned to the farm. Friends were enlisted to plant the first vines in 2007. Today the winery has 10 acres under vine and grow a variety of grapes.
The red wines included Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Touriga and Bordeaux blends. White wines include Chardonnay, Traminette, Vidal Blanc and Viognier.
The winery allows weddings and private events. The tasting room is particularly cozy with a big, stone fireplace and ample seating.
Outside, picnic spots overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. Light snacks are available, but outside food is encouraged. cozy tasting room with a stone fireplace; kids welcome; four-legged friends welcome, too.
