Barcelona’s El Born Centre de Cultura I Memória building which you see now was once a market square dating from the 17th-century. In 1876 a metal building replaced it and stalls installed to house the fruit and vegetable market.
By 1971 the market moved to a new location. This created considerable debate over what to do with the building and space. From 1971 to 2001 the Authorities used the building for several political rallies, fairs, concerts, exhibits, performing arts, and festivals.
During a renovation and excavation project, archaeological remains of the Born Neighbourhood from the 17th and 18th – centuries came to light. The fossilized neighborhood and archaeological site are known as the Ciutat del Born and accessible (free of charge). Furthermore you have the option of a paid walking tour through the area.
