One of Australia's most stylish country towns

Fifteen minutes south-west of Byron Bay in the lush hinterland of northern NSW, Bangalow is a town where designer homewares rub shoulders with knitted tea-cosies in the window of the Country Women’s Association’s meeting room, and fashion outlets such as the nomad-chic Island Luxe occupy charming, high-ceilinged heritage buildings.

Make sure you wander off Byron Street, the main drag, and down a side street or two in search of local secrets such as Polish, where vintage furniture is lovingly brought back to life in the town’s cavernous old Masonic Hall.

For dining, try Town, which has a cafe (downstairs) and one of the Northern Rivers region’s best restaurants (upstairs), specialising in Japanese-inspired degustation dinners. Another local favourite is The Italian Diner which apart from having great food, wine and coffee has a larger-than-life photograph of Sophia Loren on the back wall.

Bangalow Market Day is on the 4th Sunday of every month in a grove of camphor laurel trees, another good reason to visit. Bangalow also has a farmers’ market on Saturdays 8-11am.
