Set in a renovated garage, August First Bakery is a popular spot with locals for good reason. Find a table inside and soak up the smell of fresh baked bread, or grab a seat on the outdoor patio. Whether it’s a sandwich on their bread, one of their delicious pastries or their toasted bakery rolls – baked fresh every morning and served with local butter — you can’t really go wrong.
August First also makes a mean sandwich — worth a try for the bread alone. The Vermonter with turkey, Cabot cheddar, apples and cranberry may is delicious, and they make one of the best BLTs around. You also might want to take a loaf with you – grab a baguette to go and pick up some good Vermont cheese and you’ve got yourself a picnic.
One word of advice though – don’t come to the café intent on getting some work done or doing some online planning for your day’s adventures. In order to encourage conversation and a sense of community, August First does not have WiFi and is ‘screen-free’ (use of laptops or tablets strongly discouraged).
