For those who think the Cape is all about the sun, drop your notions and dip into the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail in Wellfleet. A mixture of sandy trail and boardwalk, this 1.2-mile (round-trip) trail takes you into a completely different world.
Cedars and maples grow thickly from this peat-rich swamp, blocking out most of the sun and creating a cool, intimate, lost world. The settlers razed these forests to get at the light and malleable cedar. Now cedar competes with maple, which, in time, will likely prevail. For now, you can enjoy the stillness and color of this once-dense forest.
Sandy trails prevail as you break out of the canopy of trees, and steep steps on each end can leave you panting. Oh yes, bring water and insect repellent.
