Puerto Rico and Belize are the only two places in the Western Hemisphere where it’s possible to take a tube/float tour through caves carved out of limestone by river water.
In Puerto Rico, the tour operator is Atabey Eco Adventures west of San Juan. It’s well worth the drive to check out this amazing area of caves and forests.
The full-day adventure is designed for adults and older teens, takes 6 to 7 hours, and includes hiking through the rainforest to indigenous Indian gravesites, natural pools, and photographic view points.
All gear is supplied, but bring snacks in a zip-lock bag and drinking water.
A traditional Puerto Rican meal is served after the tour. Wear hiking boots or
sneakers with good tread, and bring along a change of clothes and a towel. Bike gloves are recommended.
