The Art Gallery of NSW presents an overview of the history of Australian art, from Aboriginal and colonial through to modern works, as well as significant collections of European and Asian art.
There’s also always an international exhibition or two on show as well, although unlike the the rest of the gallery, these usually involve an admission fee.
There’s a range of free guided tours, but the best is the collection highlights tour daily at 11am (except Mon), 1pm, & 2pm.
Wednesday night is Art after Hours, a changing programme of free events from 5pm until 9pm featuring films, talks, tours and performances.
Sunday afternoon is all about kids with free performance and storytelling at 2.30pm. During school holidays there are daily character performance as well as kid’s art classes and special art tours for for kids.
