The Arrière Pays Niçois is more or less synonymous with County of Nice. It is a vast territory containing spectacular perched villages, high mountains, beautiful valleys and even a small population of wolves!
The Arrière Pays literally means the hinterland or ‘back’ country of Nice and is often referred to as Nice Beyond or simply ‘the Beyond’. It includes the magnificent Mercantour National Park with its 600km of footpaths, 2000 species of plants and 58 species of mammals.
Essentially, it is the very south eastern corner of France and consists of the mountains behind the City of Nice leading up to the border with Italy. It is contained within the appropriately named département or county of Alpes-Maritimes.
