We think of social media as a recent phenomenon. The American Computer Museum’s displays make a compelling argument that it’s about 5,000 years old — and that the first “selfie” was taken on the moon in 1969.
The only routine aspect to this museum is its exterior. Inside is an extraordinary world of firsts that you have to see to believe in little Bozeman, Montana: The world’s first hand-held electronic calculator and original shirt-pocket electronic calculator, the first video games, an original Apple computer, first IBM PC, first Apple Mac and … you get the idea.
Oh, and then there’s a watch worn on the moon and the reconstructed 2,200-year-old computer. On display beginning in April 2016: equipment used to hack Hitler’s code in World War II.
