Every day of the week there is a fruit and vegetable market in this lovely space. Although tourists love to browse here, locals actually shop at these stalls for fresh food regularly, taking home the best, the ripest, and the most beautiful. Daily shopping was necessary in a warm climate where refrigeration is a recent innovation. The small enclave, called la Place aux Herbes, dates from 1360, and it is the scene of the original fish and vegetable market.
Stop for coffee at la Brûlerie Richelme, at roasting time, you can smell the shop before you see it. Expect a bustling trade in coffee all day long from Tuesday through Saturday. Find an outside table and watch the way the locals shop.
