According to Christian tradition and modern literary fiction, a saint who arrived from the Holy Land with Mary Magdalene (the patron saint of Provence) on a boat belonging to Lazarus, founded the first place of worship on this site in Aix en Provence. The church was built between the 5th and 19th centuries, it is an intriguing tapestry of architecture patterns. The facade includes a Medieval wall constructed with stones from the original Roman forum. The Romanesque entrance way includes a set of magnificent 16th-century walnut doors.
