From Victoria you can visit Washington’s San Juan Islands. Washington State Ferries run a daily service between Anacortes and Sidney, just south of Victoria with stops en route in the San Juan Islands. With a bit of planning, this getaway makes for an ideal addition to any Victoria trip. Remember your passport as you’ll be crossing the border.
Stop off at Friday Harbour to see the sights and shops, and maybe pick up a box lunch from San Juan Island Cheese. then take the perimeter road south to American Camp. It’s a long stretch (watch out for cyclists) with expansive views. Return via Pelindaba Lavender Farm before heading along the coast road to English Camp. Drive on to the Westcott Bat Scupture Park. From there it’s a few minutes to Roche Harbour, a good stop for the evening.
Hop onto an early morning inter-island ferry and 35 minutes later you’ll arrive at Orcas Island. Local traffic tends to head straight up the main road to Eastsound, but as visitors, choose the extraordinarily pretty and winding drive west to Deer Harbor first. Then head north to Eastsound where you can browse specialty shops and enjoy lunch.
Exploring the eastern arm of Orcas island, including Moran State Park and Olga will take the better part of your afternoon.

Shaw Island is a pleasant morning detour en route to Lopez Island, although you’ll need to co-ordinate your day carefully around sailing times. Once on Lopez, there’s little left to do than enjoy the bucolic atmosphere and go on rambles along the bluff at Iceberg Point and around Spencer Spit State Park.
