Spiritual circles, battlefield ghosts and a Loch Ness monster: Inverness to Fort William

Save to my Account

This road-trip starts by visiting sights outside the city of Inverness before heading south along a broad valley aptly known as the Great Glen. If you’re going to spot Nessie the Loch Ness monster, then this is where it will happen!

Morning

Visit the mystical Clava Cairns and the eerie battlefield at Culloden; if you take your time both can be very moving.

Lunch

Try the Oakwood Restaurant in Dochgarroch (IV3 8JG) en route to Drumnadrochit where you can also eat well at the Fiddlers (IV63 6UU).

Afternoon

Having driven to Drumnadrochit along the northwest shore of Loch Ness visit the Loch Ness Centre to make your own mind up about the Loch Ness Monster legend. Then try some Nessie-spotting yourself around the majestic ruins of Urquhart Castle. Continue to follow the shore road south to Monster Activities for watersports or other outdoor activities, if there’s time. Finally follow the Great Glen south to the mountain town of Fort William.

Evening

Eat at Crannog Seafood Restaurant or the Ben Nevis Inn.

Sleep

Book Accommodation online. Particularly good are the Myrtle Bank Guest House, the Highland Hotel or the budget Bank Street Lodge.
