San Francisco, the City by the Bay, has long courted families with her temperate weather, ample activities and amazing cuisine. Whether your kids are three, or thirteen, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

For First Timers

First time visitors often stay around Fisherman’s Wharf, taking advantage of the ease of riding the cable car to Union Square to shop.

In the wharf, snap pictures of the sea lions, play antique video games at Musee Mechanique, and reserve your spot to tour Alcatraz in the afternoon when the fog lifts.

If the weather’s nice, chill out on Crissy Field before heading to Fort Mason for Friday evening’s Off the Grid food truck extravaganza. Or head to North Beach for some of the city’s best pizza at Tony’s Pizzeria Napoletana.

For Creative Kiddos

Grab breakfast at the Ferry Building.

Geek out over science at the Exploratorium. Grub on burgers at Gott’s Roadside.

Ride Muni to Yerba Buena. The kids will love the carousel, huge steel slides, live music in summer, and the Children’s Creativity Museum. There’s bowling, ice skating, and a fun arcade onsite as well.

Take a walk through San Francisco history as you wander through the Castro District. Dinner at Castro’s Chow rarely disappoints.

The Best Park in San Francisco

After dim sum at Yank Sing, take Muni to Golden Gate Park.

Explore the California Academy of Sciences, the DeYoung Museum, the Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco Botanical Gardens and the epic playground.

Lunch option are plentiful in the museums, or along the inner Sunset corridor. Pacific Catch often hits the spot for all palates.

Check out the secondhand kids clothing store Chloe’s Closet before heading out to Ocean Beach to watch the sunset. Eat pizza and sip house-brewed beer in Park Chalet’s garden overlooking the sea and Golden Gate Park.

Urban Adventurers

Book a mural tour of the Mission district with Precita Eyes. Eat your way through the abundant eateries that make up the Mission District with stops at Osha Thai and Mission Pie. Relax in the sun with the rest of the sun bunnies at Dolores Park.

Enjoy the city’s freshest ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery. Ride the J Muni to Glen Park’s Gialina for dinner.

Nature Lovers

Beach fans with cars can motor out to Fort Funston to hike down the cliff as hang-gliders soar above. In the Glen Park neighborhood, hike through eucalyptus at Glen Park Canyon, or Stern Grove. Those with younger children can fill an entire day hunting for treasures in the Presidio.

Still have time to explore?

Check out the Cable Car Museum, Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Company, and the San Francisco Zoo all cater to families. And in summer make a sojourn to lively AT&T Park where sluggers prove to be crowd faves.
