Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the Roanoke Valley offer plenty of adventures for dogs and their humans.
Start with a morning walk on Mill Mountain to the Roanoke Star and overlook, where you might run into the city’s mayor walking his dog. You and your pooch can share your adventure with friends and family on the live Roanoke Star Cam.
Head back into the heart of city to explore Market Square and pick up some local fare for a picnic, grab lunch at a pet-friendly restaurant with outdoor dining or stop by Orvis for outdoor gear. After lunch, stroll along the David R. and Susan S. Goode Railwalk, which highlights Roanoke’s rich railroad history.
In the afternoon, head to the suburb of Grandin to visit Black Dog Salvage, home of the DIY Network television cast of Salvage Dawgs. After exploring the huge architectural salvage warehouse and meeting the black Labs for whom the business is named, walk to Viva La Cupcake for a custom-flavored cupcake and a “pupcake” for your canine pal.
Roanoke’s Highland Park has an off-leash dog park. The city also boasts more than 22 miles of greenways, including The Roanoke River Greenway, Lick Run Greenway, Mill Mountain Greenway, Murray Run Greenway and Tinker Creek Greenway.
For wider exploration, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is one of the largest municipal parks in the U.S., and the nearby Appalachian Trail also welcomes leashed dogs on most trails.
Take a fun day trip to Chateau Morrisette Winery, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County, which hosts several outdoor summertime music festivals. As the winery’s mascots are Labrador Retrievers, dogs are naturally welcome in the tasting room and the gift shop carries tons of pet-centric gifts and merchandise. Annual pet friendly events in Virginia’s Blue Ridge include Woofstock and Dogtober Fest in Roanoke and the Horse and Hound Wine Festival in Bedford County.
Pet friendly accommodations in Roanoke are easy to find at the Sheraton, Holiday Inn Valley View and Hyatt Place. The Peaks of Otter lodge in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains also offers pet friendly rooms, as does Hotel Floyd.
