Lake Tahoe, California, has been a popular family destination for as long as it’s been attracting visitors. And for good reason: year-round outdoor activities that everyone can enjoy, reasonably priced meal options, and a glut of vacation homes and condos that make the perfect home-base for an enjoyable family vacation.

Lodging on Lake Tahoe

Check VRBO and AirBnB to find great deals on vacation homes and condos. If you’re visiting in winter, consider booking a spot near one of the several family-friendly ski resorts: Donner Ski Ranch, Homewood, or Mount Rose. If it’s summertime fun you’re after, you’ll want to book a place near one of the top beaches on the lake — Sand Harbor on the east shore, Lester Beach at D.L. Bliss on the west shore, Baldwin Beach on the south shore — or go for one of many great vacation homes around Donner Lake in Truckee.

Attractions & Dining

No matter where you end up staying, you’ll want to keep a few key family-friendly attractions in mind. KidZone, in Truckee, is a great spot to take kids age 6 months to 10 to play if the weather isn’t cooperating for outdoor activities.

In the summer, Kings Beach Mini Golf is a ton of fun with kids, and is conveniently located nearby two great family food spots, The Log Cabin Cafe and the Char-Pit. Also in summer, the Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park — the first aerial treetop adventure park in California — is a great place to spend the day.

In winter, check out the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, an indoor Olympic skate rink that’s tons of fun for kids. And any time of the year is a good time to visit Woodward Mountain Center at Boreal, where you can practice mountain tricks on an awesome network of indoor skateparks, foam pits, and trampolines. Squaw Valley High Camp is another great year-round destination for the family: You’ll not only get a fun ride up the mountain and a great view, but also access to an outdoor pool and hiking trails in summer and snow-rimmed hot tub in winter.
