Families with young kids have been heading to Wisconsin Dells for decades. Here are some of the most kid-friendly places, especially for the 8-and-under set.
Book a room in a resort with a small waterpark. The kids will still have plenty of fun, and you won’t have to worry about lots of big kids racing around. At Grand Marquis, the indoor waterpark features a triple-chute dolphin slide. The Atlantis Waterpark Hotel & Suites boasts the “Aqua Kingdom” waterpark, which contains a five-foot-long toddler slide. Great Wolf Lodge is another good choice. Yes, it has a large waterpark with rides for people of all ages. But its programming is aimed at kids. There’s a nightly story hour, for example, and the kids’ spa Scooops.
Kids of all ages love Wisconsin Deer Park, where they can feed free-roaming deer corn from ice cream cone cups. Circus World offers daily circus performances, complete with acrobats, animals and clowns.
Young kids love train rides, and there are two great ones in the area. The Riverside & Great Northern Railway offers rides on a 15-inch gauge railway. And a train chugs around Timbavati Wildlife Park, home to a vast array of animals, plus shows and a petting zoo. There’s another petting zoo at Country Bumpkin Farm Market, which also features a mini-tractor corral and plastic duck races.
If it’s rainy, head to Knuckleheads. The indoor amusement park filled with pint-sized rides such as mini bumper cars and flying planes.
Hungry? Mac’s specializes in that all-time kid-favorite dish, macaroni and cheese, offering numerous varieties. Denny’s Diner is the place to go if you want to keep the kids occupied while you eat. The restaurant’s walls and ceiling are covered with everything from clowns to a gorilla riding a motorcycle. Trains rule again at Buffalo Phil’s, as they chug around the restaurant delivering meals to patrons.
