Grown-ups can have fun in Wisconsin Dells, too

Discover Wisconsin Dells for adults. For decades, the Dells was seen as a family destination. A land of mini-golf and go-karts, storybook characters and waterslides, it wasn’t sophisticated or chic, and didn’t try to be. Hungry? Grab a hot dog or slice of pizza. Want a souvenir? Duck into a t-shirt shop and go at it.

Today, though, things are different. A wealth of creative businesses now cater to adults. Sure, you’ll still see throngs of shrieking kids having a grand old time as you make your way around town. But you don’t have to take any with you if you’d rather not.

Dells for Adults: Lodging

Start your trip-planning by booking a room at a serene spot, like Sundara Inn & Spa, tucked into 26 acres of pine forest. Another good choice: the posh Inn at Wawanissee Point near Devil’s Lake, a mere 20-minute drive from the Dells.

Dells for Adults: Attractions

No matter your interests, you’ll find plenty of activities that suit adult tastes. Duffers can tackle the links at Wild Rock Golf Course, which offers a challenging, highly regarded course, while thrill-seekers can fly over the treetops (and a lake!) at Bigfoot Zipline Tours.

Love the outdoors? Then head to Mirror Lake State Park for some hiking and kayaking, followed by a stroll through the International Crane Foundation, the only place in the world where you can see every species of crane. If history is your thing, discover how the Dells became a tourist attraction at the H.H. Bennett Studio, one of Wisconsin’s state historic sites.

Enjoy touring wineries or sampling craft brews? Fawn Creek Winery and Port Huron Brewing Co. are calling your name. FYI: Fawn Creek has space to picnic outside, and often holds special events such as live music and trivia nights.

Dells for Adults: Dining

You can definitely still find pizza and hot dogs in the Dells. But if your palate appreciates something a little more refined, head to Field’s at the Wilderness, specializing in steaks, or try old standbys such as the House of Embers, a Dells favorite since 1959.

Dells for Adults: Shopping

The Dells is working on attracting interesting boutiques to balance out its wealth of fudge and t-shirt shops, but for now your best bet is to hit the Outlets at the Dells, which is home to stores such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Coach and Polo Ralph Lauren.

But remember, even if you’re an adult, you don’t have to overlook your inner child. If a waterpark tempts you, by all means head in and zip down a few waterslides. This is the Dells, after all!
