Find spectacular diversity beyond beautiful beaches

Not all islands are created equal. Some have beautiful beaches; others are blessed with spectacular scenery. Some have unique national parks and rare wildlife; others possess ancient monuments and unique historical attractions. Sri Lanka has all of these and more, and few destinations pack as much into such a modest area as this superbly beautiful Indian Ocean island.

It’s this remarkable diversity that’s key to Sri Lanka unique appeal, with myriad attractions squeezed together in close – sometimes almost bewildering – proximity. It’s possible to start the day sunning yourself on a tropical beach under swaying coconut palms, and finish it in the crisp mountain air of the island’s superb hill country, surround by verdant tea plantations.

World-class leopard-tracking, elephant-spotting and whale-watching trips can be combined with visits to some of Asia’s oldest and most majestic ancient religious monuments. Buddhist stupas and Hindu shrines rub shoulders with British and Dutch colonial-era churches and streetscapes. You can go searching for rare endemic bird species in the island’s UNESCO-listed rain- and cloudforests, party on the island’s legendary beaches or join the crowds at one of the country’s many spectacular religious festivals.

Coastal Sri Lanka

Beaches are perhaps the first thing that spring to mind when the name Sri Lanka is mentioned to many people, and the country has them in spades, from well-developed west coast hangouts like package-tour Beruwela, stylish Bentota and hippy Hikkaduwa, through to more low keys south coast destinations like Unawatuna and Mirissa, east coast Arugam Bay and Passekudah – as well as plenty of totally off-the-beaten-track coves and strips of sands perfect for have-a-go Robinson Crusoe types.

Ancient monuments of Sri Lanka

Significant sites also come thick and fast, most of them clustered in the north and centre of the island, the result of one of Asia’s oldest and most remarkable Buddhist civilizations. The ruined cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa boast a host of show-stoppers including some of the biggest stupas in the world, while the cave temples of Dambulla are contrastingly small but perfectly formed. The extraordinary rock-top citadel of Sigiriya is perhaps the island’s single most remarkable site, while the world-famous Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and the holy mountain of Adam’s Peak are two of its most revered.

Sri Lankan landscapes

As varied as the island’s constantly changing terrains, these range from the idyllic coastal beaches and lagoons through to the World Heritage listed rainforest and cloudforest of Sinharaja and the Knuckles Range and the spectacular miniature mountains of the hill country.

Wildlife of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has more elephants (both wild and captive) per square mile than almost any other country in the world, best seen during the famous “Gathering” at Minneriya National Park. Yala National Park is the best place on the planet to spot wild leopards, while nearby Mirissa offers superlative whale-watching. The island is a magnet for birders, too, with a range of colourful resident and migratory species.
