Next to nobody visits Canada to visit Saskatchewan, and even Canadians seem to love poking fun at the province and the dullness of its prairies. But this is predictably unfair; those who bother to leave either of the two straight and rather dull highways (Hwy-1 & Hwy-16) that allow you to zip across the province in half-a-day have some real surprises in store.
The province’s main towns are both worth a stop – Saskatoon for it’s native heritage at Wanuskewin; Regina for its Mounties at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy – but the rest of the highlights list is a lot more unusual.
On it is Manitou Lake, a body of water that’s saltier than the Dead Sea, producing not only amazing buoyancy but also legendary curative powers. Then, there’s a much-promoted and accomplished theatrical reconstruction of the 1920s gangster era at the Tunnels of Moose Jaw; and the unexpectedly awe-inspiring Grasslands National Park which preserves the prairies as they were when buffalo roamed. And for those interested in history Saskatchewan also harbours several important forts and sites related to the taming and settlement of the Canadian West, not least some key sites where friction with Metis occurred.
