Who would you choose as a seatmate on a cross-continential road trip?

Well, I once strapped a life-size mermaid pinata into the passenger seat on a cross-country trip and found that other drivers gave me a wide berth. But I would have to say that my Mom, now 87, is my favorite travel partner. She gifted me with a love of travel from the time I was a kid, and her internal GPS is still going strong.

What's the most underrated destination in your opinion?

Around the world, there are lots of places that deserve more attention. However, within the region I am writing about for Bindu, I think the city of Norfolk, Virginia, is largely overlooked as a destination. Besides vibrant nightlife, art and dining scenes, the home of the North Atlantic Fleet offers tons of attractions and tours, many of them free, that give a unique view of our military both historically and today. And it’s the home of PETA, so it’s heaven for vegetarians.
