Who would you choose as a seatmate on a cross-continential road trip?

Patti Smith because I love her mind – or at least that which she shares on the page. Greg Brown so he could sing me songs and tell me stories. Leonard Cohen–if he were still alive–because he’d appreciate and enrich the silence.  Haruki Murakami so we could hit up small jazz clubs all over the world.

What do you do when you encounter an unexpected dead-end?

Chuckle (to myself) and kick back until I know what to do/where to go next. I’ve met some wildly interesting people by doing this.

What's your most exciting or surprising travel experience?

Too many to choose from, but I’d have to say a solo trip to Nepal in which I trekked the Annapurna circuit. After 3.5 weeks, my departure date arrived and I wasn’t ready to leave. If I hadn’t had a grad school deadline, I would’ve chucked my ticket and stuck around.

What is the most important thing you've learned from traveling?

Everything is always possible and everything always works out.
