What's your most exciting or surprising travel experience?

While working for CNN, I was able to travel with Jacques Cousteau to Antarctica while he was shooting documentary involving six children from each of the other continents. Twenty years later, I was able to return to Antarctica with one of the now-grown kids along with Prince Albert of Monaco.

What do you do when you encounter an unexpected dead-end?

    Go around it!

Do you prefer traveling alone or with a companion? Why?

It entirely depends on the destination and the companion. When researching a new location to write about, its easier being able to move at my own speed. When I return, I love to bring someone with me and show them my discoveries!

What is the most important thing you've learned from traveling?

That it is truly a small world. Everyone, every culture and every place – no matter how different, has something in common. Those in other countries are just as curious about those visiting them as the people who are coming to explore.
