What do you do when you encounter an unexpected dead-end?

My best friend and favorite travel companion and I call this a “wrong turn to adventure”! Once, while driving through Austria, we took a wrong turn and almost ended up in Italy. We stopped at a tiny store to get directions and discovered yodeling stuffed cows.We bought one, named it Tiny Ausgang and it sat on our dash throughout the rest of the journey.

Have you ever been somewhere that was so bad you couldn't write about it?

Yes, and since my mother always told me “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”, I won’t write negative travel stories or reviews.

What's your most exciting or surprising travel experience?

It’s hard to pin down one experience, but one of the most surprising and profound experiences I have ever had was going out at night to watch the giant leatherback turtles swim into a Trinidad beach, dig their nests, lay their eggs and then swim back out to sea. Amazing!!

What is the most important thing you've learned from traveling?

That Mark Twain was right…”travel is fatal to prejudice”. People are much more alike than different and it’s the people, not the place, that make travel fulfilling.
