I was born in New York and live there now. I've been a writer of different things at different times, a resident of half a dozen countries and visitor to more, and a benevolent breaker of rules. My work has several times been listed among the notables in The Best American Travel Writing and The Best American Essays. In Antigua, Guatemala, in 2005, I created Chocolate in Context, a project that coincided with wonderful momentum in the blogging world and the chocolate industry. Now I combine my original blog with Cinco de Marzo (a chronicle of my life in food beyond chocolate) and Translational Movement (a record of places I have been and intend to go). I teach writing at NYU.

I’ve always had a soft spot for Alan Alda, ever since I started watching M*A*S*H reruns in high school. Load up the jeep!
